Who We Are

Helping Hands is an outreach initiative, caring for orphaned and vulnerable children who attend the ULOA Primary School near Monzi, in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa. The work started back in 1999, when Mark and Vicci Lonsdale, a local farming couple and members of the River Church in Mtubatuba, South Africa, got a call from the head mistress of the school, seeking help for some of the children, whom she identified as being in desperate need.  Many of the children’s households were run by single parents, or grandparents caring for their orphaned grandchildren. In some cases, the households had only the children to fend for themselves.

As the organization grew and funds started to come in, it became important for Helping Hands to be established as a formal entity. Thus, in 2010, Helping Hands was registered as a non-profit organization.

What started out as a feeding initiative for the orphaned children of the school has grown into what Helping Hands is today, which includes a boys and girls’ home for orphans.

The school, where Helping Hands does its work, is located in a community which is severely afflicted by AIDS, unemployment and poverty. The number of orphaned children is ever increasing.

With the continued support of the kind and willing hearts of its donors,  the Helping Hands team (its founders,  trustees, staff and volunteers) strives to make a difference not only in the lives of many children, but also in the community in which it serves.

Helping Hands’ Christian Position

Helping Hands is underpinned by Christian biblical principles, and we are encouraged to act in accordance with the James 1 v 27 scripture: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (ESV).

We work and learn in an environment that is free and open to preach the Word of God, and therefore in the light of the teaching of the Bible, we will respect other faiths, without compromising or diluting our own Christian beliefs.
